When Trials Come The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. Matthew 13:20–21.
How could people who received My message with great excitement later abandon their faith? The answer is simple. When they received the Gospel, they thought they were trading their unhappy lives for happier ones. They thought their lives were going to get easier, not harder. No one told them that I had said, “In this world you will have trouble.” So when trouble came, their shallow roots gave way, and their faith withered. They didn’t know that to follow Me is to deny yourself and take up your cross daily. They embraced a form of godliness but never understood the true nature of becoming My follower. Child, you know that following Me means laying aside your self-centered rights, dying to yourself daily, and living to glorify God. When you encounter trials, instead of running away from Me, you must run to Me. Realize that even your greatest trials are but momentary afflictions, and your enduring faith will glorify the Father and produce for you treasures in heaven!
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. John 16:33.
